the spiral staircase

Has it been a while since your Joy & Ease of Improv classes?
Pam misses working and playing with you!
Learning to improvise is like climbing a spiral staircase with specific concepts dotted around the outermost circle: Joy … Ease … Quieting the Inner Critic … Acceptance … Agreement … Being of Service … Connection … Playing More ... The first time around the circle, we're introduced to the basics. As we continue improvising, we keep circumnavigating the spiral, revisiting these same concepts again and again and again. Though the concepts stay the same, we are different, changed through experience, growth, and practice.
This class offers advanced students the opportunity to revisit key lessons pulled directly from Improv 1-4. Even more impactfully, you'll re-experience the basics through a new lens with other experienced improvisers. Plus, you'll get to apply these core skills to longer scenework and montages, providing opportunities to integrate the lessons into real practice. After each class, Pam will share the relevant chapter(s) from “The Joy & Ease of Improv Companion Book” to deepen the learning.
The idea for this class was born from advanced students retaking Improv 1-4 and talking about how amazed they felt by the benefits. They gained appreciation for the fact that understanding deepens with every experience of these foundational lessons. Eventually, the (not-so) basics become muscle memory after hours and hours and hours of practice. And even then we might forget, take another revolution around the improv spiral staircase, and those old lessons becomes new again. Repetition is magic in improv! Join Pam in revising the basics with joy and ease!

*Happier Valley Comedy rents land that was stolen from Indigenous people, including the Pocumtuc and Nipmuc tribes. A land acknowledgement is not appropriate or adequate to address this injustice that continues to harm people today. Therefore, we have instituted an ongoing process of contributing to the preservation of the lands and cultures of Northeastern Indigenous Peoples. All class fees contain an additional $3 to benefit The Nolumbeka Project, a local nonprofit whose mission is dedicated to these goals.
