Work Exchange Program

work exchange program for hvc students

In exchange for big discounts on HVC classes,
Work Exchange Volunteers will work 4-8 Saturdays from 6pm to 11pm.
*Discounts: One week of class equals one Work Exchange shift,
i.e. working 4 shifts would equal a 50% discount on an 8-week class.
During the Summer, one shift equals one Reps class. Discount can be saved for a Fall class if preferred.*

Work Exchange opportunities are awarded based on availability and good fit.
Volunteers must be available select Saturday evenings during their class session
(including the week before class starts and the make-up week.)
There are a limited amount of volunteer opportunities available each season.
This program is only open to HVC Training Program students.

Responsibilities include:
House manager
Box Office
Setup and breakdown of space
Light cleaning (sweeping, vacuuming, wiping down bathrooms, dusting)

Though personal preferences are taken into account, volunteers may be assigned any of the tasks above.
(Accommodations can be made for physical abilities.)

Volunteers are expected to give ample advance notice (i.e., 2+ weeks) if they are unable to make their shift. Shifts will be rescheduled for the next available time at the convenience of the theater and availability of the volunteer. Unexcused absences, repeated cancellation of shifts, failure to fulfill contract requirements, and significant difficulty completing assigned responsibilities may result in the student’s Work Exchange being cancelled, the student paying additional funds for their current class to account for unfulfilled work, and being ineligible for future participation in the Work Exchange Program.

Rewards include:
Discounts on HVC classes (including Reps!)
Guaranteed registration in your preferred classes (including Reps nights!)
See great shows while you work

Our gratitude!

We are seeking a volunteer to work 5-10 hours/week, some of it could be remote when not at the theater in Hadley. As the Arts Administrative Volunteer, you will learn best practices for marketing performances and events both online and in print via calendar listing submission, be trained in drafting radio segment scripts spotlighting theater/improv events, and gain skills in media outreach.

As the Arts Administration Volunteer, sample projects may include:
  • Submission of calendar listings for shows in newspapers and online listings
  • Creation of listings of local theater shows to spotlight in weekly radio segment on WRSI
  • Online marketing and research into social media promotion
  • Organization of lesson plans

There is also the opportunity for growth into arts management, publicity and marketing, and participation in upcoming company projects depending on your interests and Happier Valley Comedy’s needs. We are looking for someone highly organized and motivated, thorough and detail-oriented, and an independent worker with great follow-through. Interest in the arts and improv comedy is a plus.

Volunteers will be offered a discount on all HVC Training Program classes and workshops. We are open to exploring providing class credit for college students interested in volunteering.

If you would like to apply, please email your resume and cover letter. Volunteer dates are flexible.
