Summer classes FAQ
questions about who can Participate in Summer classes
do I need to have ALREADY taken AN improv class at happier valley comedy to take A Summer CLASS?
Yes. "Get Your Reps" and Advanced Workshops are a summer program exclusively for current and past HVC improv students. You must have completed Improv 1 or the One-Day Intensive at Happier Valley Comedy to participate. And you must meet the prerequisites if you're interested in registering for an Advanced Workshop.
i haven't taken level 1 AT HVC, But I have other improv experience. Can I participate in Summer Classes AT HVC?
As much as we love saying yes, we're not make exceptions to this prerequisite for this program. Summer classes are exclusively for previous students who are familiar with our specific approach to improvisation to provide opportunities to get practice with the skills introduced during the regular weekly classes. However, you can register for The Joy & Ease of Improv One-Day Intensive on Sunday, August 4th! OR, we can offer you this "hack" to get into our weekly Level 1 class in the fall: Sign up for the Improv 1 Super Secret Early Registration list on this page! Everyone on this list gets an email invitation to sign up for class several days before it opens to the public. Also keep your eye on the newsletter for summer workshops open to all. Thank you for your patience! When we do get to play together, it surely will be wonderful and worth the wait.
I'm a previous hvc student, so Can I take any Summer class?
Maybe, depending on where left off. If you completed Improv 1, you can take any Get Your Reps class. If you completed at least Improv 3, you also can take most Advanced Workshops. There are 25 classes classes in total this year, every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from July 9 to August 22. Over half of the dates will be Get Your Reps, which will have a mix of new and experienced students.
questions about Registration
Do i have to register for each individual class?
Yes! Each class requires advanced registration. Unlike years past, you cannot purchase a class without registering for a specific date. The cost for individual classes is $26/class for Reps and $32/class for advanced workshops. They can be purchased until the class sells out or 2 hours before the class begins.
will classes sell out? do i need to rush?
Space in each class is limited to 12 people, so if you want your choice of dates and topics, you should register early. This year, we are rolling out registration in two phases. Registration opens on the morning of Friday, June 21st for classes from July 9th through August 1st. Registration for the second half of the summer opens on Friday, July 19th for classes from August 6th through August 22nd.
If a class fills up, add your name to our waitlist here. (Be sure to note the date or workshop name you're interested in.) If needed, we may add more classes to accommodate everyone.

questions about changing registrations
How do I make changes to my registration?
Swaps can be made at least 48 hours in advance of a scheduled class. Please try your best to only register classes you know you will be able to attend. To discourage students from registering for more classes than they are able to attend, we're making a few changes this summer. First, we're opening registration in two waves. Unsure of what your August plans are? No worries, registration for August classes will open July 19th so you can work out your schedule before registering for classes! Second, we're limited the number of swaps we're able to process. We can accommodate two swaps per student before the request will be processed as a cancellation.
Classes will not be refundable unless we receive notice of cancellation 48 hours before class and we are able to fill the spot.

how last minute can i decide to join a summer class?
Registration closes 2 hours before each class. If you miss that window, you can try to just show up and pay us later, but you'll be turned away if the class is full.
questions about full or almost full classes
if a class if full, do you have a wait list?
Sign up to the Waitlist. Please be sure to note the specific date of the Reps class or name of the workshop you're hoping to join. If needed, we may add more classes to accommodate everyone.

questions about the content of classes
what exactly happens in a "get your reps" class?
The overall goal for each class is to get you up on your feet and in action as much as possible. There are no shortcuts in improv. It's all about getting repetition, which is the focus of the summer program. The actual contents of each class depends on the teacher, the desires of the students who show up that day, and the way the wind is blowing. As opposed to having a lesson plan with a particular focus, "Get Your Reps" teachers follow the needs of the students and the moment. You might do some warm-ups, then short scenes, then longer scenes. Or you might do some warm-ups and then a bunch of short form games. Though we don't know ahead of time what the content of each "Get Your Reps" will be, one thing we do know for sure: You will be getting your reps.
What's the difference between "Get Your Reps" and Advanced Improv workshops?
While the content of "Get Your Reps" classes depend on the interest, skills levels, and desires of the students in class each night, Advanced Improv Workshops are pre-planned by a rotating cast of teachers to focus on a specific skill or format. We developed this offering in response to feedback from advanced students who were looking for something a little more structured and designed to dig deeper into advanced skills. Reps are valuable for improvisers of all levels, and we encourage even our most seasoned students to attend. Advanced Workshops are an additional option to hone specific skills for students with more experience.
will reps classes really make me a stronger performer?
Yes. Based on our observations, students of all levels gained significant skills by practicing regularly. Whether you attend "Get Your Reps" or organize your own improv practice, there is no doubt that getting reps will make you a more skilled improviser. (Of course, if you elect to take some time off, that's cool too. Improvisation is an eternal journey, and wherever you are is the perfect place for you to be, as long as you're there with joy and ease.)
what have previous Reps students said about Get Your Reps?

"The Get Your Reps sessions during the summer give you the opportunity to practice improv with classmates and meet new friends, keeping skills sharp, and having a blast!"

questions about who i'll meet at summer classes
how do i know who is teaching each class?
Teachers and dates are posted near the top of this page in a list and also on the embedded calendar. You can click any event on that calendar to learn more and register!
will I know everyone in class?
Probably not, but that's the beauty of the program. Though you may be pretty infatuated and comfortable with your last class group, summer classes give you an opportunity to get infatuated and comfortable with a whole new group of people.
i want to play with my old classmates. how can we stay together?
If you and your classmates want to plan a day to stage a mass attendance of a date or make a weekly plan, you are most welcome to organize that amongst yourselves. Any way you slice it, lots of fun ahead!
what if i'm scared everyone else is going to be better than me?
Tip your jaunty cap to your inner critic who is raising that fear-based belief - which is not a fact! - and then swipe left on that message of unhelpful judgment. You've got this, pal. As long as you meet the prerequisites, you should be in good shape. Yes, there may be students there who have more improv experience than you - that's a good thing! Their experience is going to make you a more skilled improviser. It's fun and easeful to play with skilled improvisers! And guess what? Chances are, someone else in your class is intimidated by your mad improv skillz. Mixed skills programs are excellent learning opportunities.
