Summer classes FAQ
questions about who can Participate in Summer classes
do I need to have ALREADY taken AN improv class at happier valley comedy to take A Summer CLASS?
Yes. "Get Your Reps" and Workshops are a summer program exclusively for current and past HVC improv students. You must have completed Improv 1 or the One-Day Intensive at Happier Valley Comedy to participate. And you must meet the specific prerequisites if you're interested in registering for a Workshop.
(There are two exceptions to this! Improv For Scaredy Cats on July 29th and Mindfulness For Caregivers on August 12th - no experience required!)

i haven't taken level 1 AT HVC, But I have other improv experience. Can I participate in Summer Classes AT HVC?
As much as we love saying yes, we're not making exceptions to this prerequisite for this program. Summer classes are exclusively for previous students who are already familiar with our specific approach to improvisation to provide opportunities to get practice with the skills introduced during the regular weekly classes. However, you can register for The Joy & Ease of Improv One-Day Intensive on Sunday, August 3rd! If you want to be sure not to miss the next session of Improv 1, sign up for the Improv 1 Notification List on this page! Everyone on this list gets an email notification about a week before registration opens for the next session. Thank you for your patience! When we do get to play together, it surely will be wonderful and worth the wait.
I'm a previous hvc student, so Can I take any Summer class?
Maybe, depending on where you left off. If you completed Improv 1, you can take any Get Your Reps class. Workshops have their own specific prerequisites... see descriptions for more detail! There are 40 offerings in total this year, every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evening from July 14 to August 21. Over half of the dates will be Get Your Reps, which will have a mix of new and experienced students.
questions about Registration
Do i have to register for each individual class?
Yes! Each class requires registration in advance. The cost for individual classes is $26 for Reps and $32 for workshops.
will classes sell out? do i need to rush?
Space in every Reps class is limited to 12 people; some workshops will have a few more or less than that. If you want your choice of dates and topics, you should register early. This year, we are rolling out registration in two phases. Registration opens on the morning of Friday, June 20th for all July classes and on the morning of Friday, July 11th for all August classes. If a class fills up, add your name to our waitlist here. (Be sure to note the date or workshop name you're interested in.) If needed, we may add more classes to accommodate everyone.
questions about changing registrations
How do I make changes to my registration?
Please do your best to only register for classes you know you will be able to attend. We cannot give a refund or a transfer to another night unless we receive notice at least 48 hours before class and we are able to fill your spot.
how last minute can i decide to join a summer class?
Very last minute! Though many classes will likely fill up early. If there's still an open spot, you can register online right up until the class starts. Please do not show up if you haven't registered online as the class may be full.
questions about full or almost full classes
if a class is full, do you have a wait list?
Sign up to the Waitlist. Please be sure to note the specific date of the Reps class or name of the workshop you're hoping to join. If needed, we may add more classes to accommodate everyone.

questions about the content of classes
what exactly happens in a "get your reps" class?
The overall goal for each class is to get you up on your feet and in action as much as possible. There are no shortcuts in improv. It's all about getting repetition, which is the focus of the summer program. The actual content of each class depends on the teacher, the desires of the students who show up that day, and the way the wind is blowing. As opposed to having a lesson plan with a particular focus, "Get Your Reps" teachers follow the needs of the students and the moment. You might do some warm-ups, then short scenes, then longer scenes. Or you might do some warm-ups and then a bunch of short form games. Though we don't know ahead of time what the content of each "Get Your Reps" will be, one thing we do know for sure: You will be getting your reps.
What's the difference between "Get Your Reps" and Improv workshops?
While the content of "Get Your Reps" classes depend on the interest, skills levels, and desires of the students in class each night, Improv Workshops are pre-planned by a rotating cast of teachers to focus on a specific skill or format. We developed this offering in response to feedback from students who were looking for something a little more structured and designed to dig deeper into specific skills. Reps are valuable for improvisers of all levels, and we encourage even our most seasoned students to attend. Workshops are an additional option to explore or practice something more intentional.
will reps classes really make me a stronger performer?
Yes. Based on our observations, students of all levels gained significant skills by practicing regularly. Whether you attend "Get Your Reps" or organize your own improv practice, there is no doubt that getting reps will make you a more skilled improviser. (Of course, if you elect to take some time off, that's cool too. Improvisation is an eternal journey, and wherever you are is the perfect place for you to be, as long as you're there with joy and ease.)
what have previous Reps students said about Get Your Reps?
|
"The Get Your Reps sessions during the summer give you the opportunity to practice improv with classmates and meet new friends, keeping skills sharp, and having a blast!"
|
questions about who i'll meet at summer classes
how do i know who is teaching each class?
Teachers and dates are posted near the top of this page in a list and also on the embedded calendar. You can click any event on that calendar to learn more and register!
will I know everyone in class?
Probably not, but that's the beauty of the program. Though you may be pretty infatuated and comfortable with your last class group, summer classes give you an opportunity to get infatuated and comfortable with a whole new group of people.
i want to play with my old classmates. how can we stay together?
If you and your classmates want to plan a day to stage a mass attendance of a date or make a weekly plan, you are most welcome to organize that amongst yourselves. Any way you slice it, lots of fun ahead!
what if i'm scared everyone else is going to be better than me?
Tip your jaunty cap to your inner critic who is raising that fear-based belief - which is not a fact! - and then swipe left on that message of unhelpful judgment. You've got this, pal. As long as you meet the prerequisites, you should be in good shape. Yes, there may be students there who have more improv experience than you - that's a good thing! Their experience is going to make you a more skilled improviser. It's fun and easeful to play with skilled improvisers! And guess what? Chances are, someone else in your class is intimidated by your mad improv skillz. Mixed skills programs are excellent learning opportunities.
